Breakout Groups

I. Goals:
Assemble a focus group of scientists and representatives from regulatory agencies to brainstorm and provide input to the USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program regarding:

  • a. current and future research needs.
  • b. research priorities.
II. Topics:
  • a. Animals (mammals and birds)
  • b. Fish and Insects
  • c. Microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, recombinant live viruses)
  • d. Plants – Impact and Management of Transgene Flow
  • e. Plants – Pest Resistance Development and Management
  • f. Plants – Unintended Effects (Bt-tolerant/herbicide-tolerant/PHARMA plants)


III. Discussion Questions to be Considered by Breakout Groups

Domesticated Animals
Fish, Shellfish, and Insects
Microorganisms
Plants – Impact and management of gene flow
Plants – Pest resistance development and management
Plants – Unintended effects

IV. Composition:
Each Breakout Session will be limited to approximately 25 people, including an Invited Panel, consisting of:
  • Speakers from Federal Regulatory Agencies;
  • Discussion Leader;
  • Science Facilitators

Group reports will be collated into a final Workshop Report available to anyone. The Workshop Report will also be available online at the Information Systems for Biotechnology web site.
